Zenophilia and it's lesser known offshoot, "Complementarity" has become the norm in Ex Pat, Bohemian sub communities throughout the the world. Here in Minnesota we have our local, domestically grown provincial white Americans. And we also have a wonderful world class ethnically diverse multi culture. People are coming here from everywhere to right here in the "Heartland." We have the Worlds largest Somali community outside of Somalia, right here in the middle of nowhere. [And it's so COLD!!!!] Refugees come here from everywhere. We have a very supportive liberal outlook toward social engineering. And as a native outsider myself, I couldn't be happier. As world diplomats we don't have to go anywhere, I like this larger world. And besides no one deserves to be singled out just because of being different. I welcome you.
As outsiders, we are all held to much higher standards of conduct than are most people. I myself am not black myself but do I see them walking carefully, just to stay safe from the police. If you are a different kind of person or speak differently, then you too are an alien. Moving away from your place of birth is our new right of passage into early adulthood. Hence our awkwardness with first time transitional love relationships in general, which are always a little stressful for everyone. However being new can have its perks. I usually try to ask foreigners, do you like our middle America? Talking with everyone makes up for the "Minnesota Nice." (It's very passive aggressive and sticky. It's also known as Minnesota Ice. When your novelty wears off, you become invisible all over again. That cold North wind still is blowing hard.)
Pluralism is often lost on many of our local folk. There are people here in Mn. who won't date locals anymore. Natives can be either educated and alternative, (like me) or else we can be just plain white. White locals do dominate the rural country, as conservative as anywhere else in the world. And for some time now (mostly wonderful) refugees are dumped here, in the coldest place on the North American Continent. For Somalians here, their large community is not assimilating. Metropolitan "Twin Cities," (Minneapolis, St. Paul) is an endless ring of uninviting suburbs. With all the best parks and natural land here in the inner city itself. I don't know if people are feeling welcomed here or not. Hi, This is your local neighborhood Zenophile reporting to you from the urban bush, with a big shout out.
We've got expats, bohemians, punks, hippies, radicals, liberals and ancient zombie fossil beats, and of course yoga moms. We have no all night restaurants within the city limits, our city is behind the times. In the inner city we are moderately well tolerated. There is no one single minority here, so it's an earthly heaven for dignified outsiders and Mixed Bohemians. This is a wonderful place to be an outsider with an insider view. Signing off. Tomorrows topic; "Moving The Capital." See you then.
